Building Strong Relationships With Youth

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Josh Goh The Most Important Thing No matter what your youth program is doing, how youre engaging youth or what your youth development model and plan are, there is one thing that will make or break your program. If you want to make a difference in the lives of youth, it all starts from the foundation of a strong friendship. This is key. Youth dont care what you know until they know that you care. Youth dont care about your qualifications, how snazzy your dressing is, how knowledgeable you are about the issues theyre facing, how funny your jokes are, how interesting your third nipple is (well maybe). The fact is, even if you think youre the most uncool, lame, boring youth worker, if you have a heart for youth and genuinely care for them, thats going to outshine everything else youre doing in your program. Remember that youth are people and if you really want to impact them, you have to focus on people above programs. Dont ever forget: youth dont care what you know until they know that you care. Starting your youth program from that foundation will revolutionize the way you think, the way you talk to and the way you work with youth. More is Caught than Taught Many people who work with youth make the mistake of starting out the relationship with their youth with the motive of wanting them to change for the better. Sadly, what happens is they end up feeling guilty or less worthy and inevitably, the relationship breaks down. Rather, start the relationship with your youth out with the motive of wanting to be a supportive friend, giving them room to grow and develop. Let your own life and values speak louder than your words. Dont preach or enforce your value system onto the youth, rather, be a role model and lead by example. Then youll start to see real change and have a lasting impact in their lives. More is caught than taught. You may ask, Josh, then what do we DO? Theres got to be some curriculum or lesson plan or some tools we can use to build character. Youth will grow depending on their environment. Its like putting fertilizer in a plant in a musty apartment with hardly any sunlight and using the best fertilizer as opposed to placing it in good sunlight ample ventilation with no fertilizer. Your curriculum is like the fertilizer. Granted, you may have the best curriculum or tool kit in the world, but without the relationship and the love, its unlikely youll expect growth. On the flip side, if you have a great relationship with your youth, given time, theres no question youll see growth. Sure, curriculums and tools and great lessons can help the growth but they dont mean squat without the relationship. Key learning point: more is caught than taught. Spending Time So how do you show that you love and care for this younger person you hope to impact? Theres got to be something practical and concrete you can do. Simply put, youth spell L-O-V-E as T-I-M-E. The time you take, the special moments you share, all that hanging out with them speaks volumes. They are not looking for another parent or another teacher, theyre looking for friends, someone they can talk to, someone they can trust, someone to just be there. We will continue this series with our next step to Building a Strong Relationship With Youth with some simple things you can do with youth. Key Learning Points: Youth dont care what you know until they know that you care. More is caught than taught Youth spell L-O-V-E as T-I-M-E Joshua has more than 10 years of experience working with youths and currently works for PromiseWorks as their Head of Mentorship and co-created an online resource site, http://www.YouthDevelopmentResources.com. He has a unique perspective from that of a young person who is both a protg in a mentoring relationship and also responsible for promoting mentoring for PromiseWorks. His primary passion in life is to create awareness about mentoring within Singapore, develop mentorship programs including content development, working with mentors as volunteers, and ensuring that PromiseWorkss mentoring program remains relevant to youth in Singapore. Realizing he was spending more time searching for or developing effective youth resources than he was spending time with the youth, he and his mentor Ken Sapp co-created Youth Development Resources, http://www.YouthDevelopmentResources.com to cater to this need. Give Your Wedding Favors The Personal Touch

Monday, March 10th, 2008

By Emily Tanner One wedding seems to blend into another and looking for alternative ideas can be a struggle. Here are some great tips for making your wedding favors as unique as you are! Ensure your wedding favors are unique wedding favors, encompassing everything you and your partner are about. Rather than going for traditional boxes or nets, why not design your own cookie wedding favor? A personalized wedding favor is so much more memorable for the guests who attend your big day. Many brides are now purchasing personalized ribbon for wedding favors. This way, brides can choose from a wide selection of favor boxes and organza bags and turn them into a personalized wedding favor by adding personalized ribbon. Most couples choose to have their names and wedding dates printed on personalized ribbon for favor boxes, although some brides do have the guests names also printed on ribbon - a great idea for a place setting too. Another way of providing guests with a personalized wedding favor is by attaching a tag. This personalized wedding favor tag may state the names of the bride and groom along with their wedding date or the wedding venue name or a short message from the happy couple to the guests. A unique wedding favor such as this is well received by the guests and once the contents have been consumed, there is something left to have as a keepsake. In essence, all brides try to offer unique wedding favors to their guests but there is nothing worse than receiving a gift similar to one you have previously received at a wedding. Bear this in mind when you are deciding which wedding favors to offer your guests at your wedding because people do remember a unique wedding favor or a personalized wedding favor more than one which is non specific and seemingly not very well thought out. Of course, not all unique wedding favors are edible. There are many gifts that can be given to wedding guests that are inedible such as wedding favor coasters, photo album favors, picture frame wedding favors and candle wedding favors. These are just as easy to present as personalized wedding favors, again with the addition of personalized ribbon or a personalized tag. Your guests may well be equally impressed with your innovative and novel ideas as you provide them with a quality alternative to edible wedding favors. Instead of spending out on wedding favors, some brides choose to offer guests a piece of wedding cake beautifully presented in a personalized wedding favor box or a pretty organza bag. For brides who choose to give their guests some cake in a bag, they can attach a personalized wedding favor tag or tie the top with personalized ribbon. Either way, it is a lovely way of being a bit different and really offering your guests a unique wedding favor exclusive to you. Adult Dating Sites Four Simple Rules For Men

Friday, March 7th, 2008

By Teddy Shabba If you are a man who is considering joining an adult dating site it is important that you follow a few rules in order to ensure that you get the maximum amount of enjoyment out of your experience. In theory, adult dating sites should be every man’s fantasy; a site full of women simply looking to have sex. Yet, the reality is a large percentage of the women’s profiles on adult dating sites are either made up or simply used to get you to join some other site. Once you take away the fake female members and such you are looking at a ratio of at least 25 guys to every 1 woman. For your average guy, even online isn’t that great of a ratio between men and women. However, if you follow these four simple rules when it comes to adult dating sites you can improve your chances of hooking up with a real woman rather quickly. 1. No Pictures of Your Penis Just because you are looking for sex doesn’t mean she wants to see is your member. A full body shot showing off your physique is about as nude as you want to get. 2. No Mention of Sex Just like on regular dating sites the majority of women don’t want to read about what it is you plan on doing to them. For the most part women who want to read what you are going to do them never actually want to meet you. 3. If It Looks Like a Porn Star It Is a Porn Star The majority of hot women on an adult dating site will not have any picture of themselves up and if they do it will not be of the greatest quality and poses. If she doesn’t have one regular looking picture in her profile odds are it is a fake. You can send her an email if you like, but don’t respond if she ask for your email address or wants you to join another site that is way better than the one you are already paying for. 4. Real Responses Require Meeting or Getting a Phone Number Afterwards Let’s face it if you join one of these sites you either are looking for sex or looking for a cyber buddy. If as a man you are looking for sex and a woman responds to your initial email the only step left on the online process is asking for her number or setting up a meeting. Women who really are looking for sex will happily oblige while women looking for a cyber fling will come up with a variety of reasons not to give you her number and wouldn’t even dream of meeting you just yet. In the end, if you treat adult dating sites in much the same way that you would a regular dating site you will enjoy the type of success that you desire online and offline as well. Nokia 3250 - A Solid Phone And Impressive Handset

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Samuel_Herrick]Samuel Herrick If you thought mobile phones are all about slim and skinny appearances, you will be proved wrong once you see the Nokia 3250. The device is an impressive handset that comes in a slightly bulky feel and a unique twist up to 270 degrees. As the device twists, the mobile changes functions from one application to another. The Nokia 3250 is available in four different colours; black, green, pink, and silver. The twist design of the cell is made possible by having the phone split into two parts; the display half and the keypad half. With the twist the phone can change into phone mode (with the dial pad in front), camera mode (the keypad portion in a 90-degree angle), and music mode (with external music controls in front). The screen of Nokia 3250 is really neat and impressive. It allows you to change the brightness and backlight timer of the display. Below the buttons is the menu button, two soft keys, a Clear key, a five-way navigation joystick, the Talk and End keys, and an Edit key. On top of the phone is the power button, while its charging/connector port is located on its right spine. The phone comes with a micro sd card. Nokia 3250 is a gift for social butterflies. Each contact in the Nokia 3250’s address book holds up to 17 numbers, three e-mail addresses, three URLs, three street addresses, a birth date, and a note and can be assigned to a group, or one of 41 polyphonic ring tones. Other features that make the gadget useful are messaging services, a wireless Web browser, file manager, Bluetooth, speaker phone, 2 Mp camera, music player and many lifestyle features. The Nokia 3250 also has something called LifeBlog feature that lets you upload pictures on your phone directly to the Web. Nokia 3250 runs on Symbian 6.0 OS. What are the Real Challenges of the New SAT?

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

By Linda Kate Correli The Scholastic Aptitude Test is one of the most widely-taken admission tests in America. The SAT evidently has become synonymous to the college application process. Moreover, it is considered to be one of the most accurate evaluating indicators of applicants college success. The SAT gained amazing popularity among educational institutions, which are more likely to accept the SAT, rather than any other college testing programs. Whereas, for students the SAT is the most important test they have to take in their life. Thus, when the matter concerns college admissions and awarding scholarship, no exam is more crucial and responsible. Thats why, the recent innovation, introduced by the College Board, which administers the SAT, became the most controversial and nerve-racking focal point for college-bound students. Indeed, it wasnt the bolt from the blue, because educators and learners have been waiting for some changes to come since June 2002, when the College Board announced a series of changes to the SAT that were implemented only in March 2005. New SAT - New Challenges The new SAT Reasoning Test was taken equivocally, to some extent, because of its complexity. The new SAT is 3 hours and 45 minutes long, and scored on a 600-2400 scale. Besides, adding the questions from the allegebra-II to math section, and changing verbal analogies and quantitative comparisons into critical reading. The SAT introduced the drastic change, which became a real challenge for the majority of high school students. For the first time it will require students to compose a timed essay. The 25-minute essay, asking a philosophical questions, aims at evaluating how well students can communicate on paper and support their point of view. This section will produce a separate score on the 200-800 scale, where the essay will count only for 30 percent of the writing score, with 49 multiple-choice grammar questions. The mutiple questions will ask students to identify errors, and to improve the sentences and paragraphs. On the one hand, this sweeping change in the approach to assessment students writing skills is well-grounded by the employers demand in people with good research, organizational and referencing writing skills. It is not a secret for anyone that nowadays good writing skills are not a privilege of the writers, but an essential skill for the many. Hence, writing extends beyond the walls of the education system into students later life. Gaston Carper, the new ambitious head of the College Board, claimed in response to numerous questions as per the reason of this vital alteration, We were hearing from schools across the country, from employers all across the country: Young people are getting out of college not able to write, entering college, where writing is much more in demand. Thus, on the other hand this novelty put a new heavy burden on kids, who have to place more emphasize on their writing skills. Moreover, parents of some high school students cannot afford to pay for expensive preparation classes. Hence, students, having some difficulties with writing, are deprived of the opportunity to cope with the test successfully, therefore, to receive college education. It can be interpreted as discrimination for those, who cannot set out their thoughts coherently and articulately on paper, thus, are pretty good at math, and can come through critical reading with flying colors. One more challenge for the students to face is critical reading. This is the new name for what is used to be called the verbal portion of the test, but there will be some changes. The vocabulary is de-emphasized with the end of analogies, and comprehension questions are introduced on shorter passages, or pairs of short passages, besides the traditional longer ones. Some words are to be said about the alterations, introduced to the math section. There is a handful of high-level algebra II questions, where the special accent is made on graphs and interpreting visual data. Apparently, it wont be a piece of the cake for anyone. Overall, the changes have brought praise from some, who say the new test is more relevant to what students need to know for college. But there are also concerns they will more negatively affect students from weaker schools, and that the essay makes this test more cashable. Meanwhile, the changes to the SAT go through a special lens of evaluation, and really create much confusion. Students will have to make additional preparation, beyond the regular course work, seeking for preparation courses, which offer tutoring on weak subjects, provide an opportunity to take practice tests, and emphasize the fundamentals of good essay writing. Striving For Excellence “What We Do and The People We Touch”

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dr._Rick_Goodman] Dr. Rick Goodman As health care providers few people understand what we do and the people whose lives we touch including ourselves. If we are striving for excellence as providers our own personal issues become less important and something magical suddenly happens. We find out that we have the ability to change someones life and touch them if for only a brief period of time. This is what separates us from all humanity. We provide the link between the system and our patients lives, however first let me explain to you my definition of a health care provider. A health care provider is any individual or groups of individuals that contribute to the health and welfare of those we come in contact with. To be more concise, it includes everyone from the doctors to the volunteers in a facility. Whether the facility is a hospital, surgical center or private practice we provide the link between the system and our patients lives. Today we face the challenge of keeping up with changes brought on by legislation, the swell of patients that need our services that are uninsured or under insured, and staffs that are working longer hours than ever before juggling multiple responsibilities. Our patients are demanding more of us than ever before which is what they deserve, after all we provide the link. I guess the question that is posed to me most often is How can we balance our lives while contributing to the lives of our patients and still maintain balance in our own lives? I believe in order to strive for excellence and achieve personal balance the rules for ourselves and our patients should be simple. After all there are certain needs that are common to all of the patients that I have observed regardless of the setting. They all want Love, Appreciation and Respect. They need this like the food they eat, the air they breathe and the water that they drink. If we as providers can fulfill these common desires we will receive benefits that far outweigh the service that we provide. It has been my experience that patients truly appreciate the administrators that help them with their insurance issues. They are also eternally grateful to the doctor who performs masterfully under all circumstances. A kind word from the front desk receptionist who is juggling multiple responsibilities can also have a positive effect on the outcome of a patient. Maybe if just for just one moment we looked at life from our patients point of view we would really appreciate our own work and its positive effect on the people we touch. There is another triad of excellence that contributes to our personal balance and to our patients overall experience as we strive for excellence. Im referring to the cornerstone of success. Faith, Forgiveness and Gratitude. Everyday as providers of health care we must have faith in our doctors, their staffs, and the system we function in. Ultimately the responsibility is on us as health care providers to make the best decisions possible for our patients. Inevitably as human beings living on planet earth we are going to make mistakes. The most important lesson we need to learn is that people make mistakes people are not the mistake. So when it happens and it will, dont beat yourself up. Forgive yourself so that you can make better decisions next time. Providers who recognize this concept are able to move on and contribute to their patients health in a more positive manner with better outcomes. Lastly as health care providers we need to practice Gratitude. We should be grateful that we have chosen a profession that gives us the opportunity to touch peoples lives on a regular basis and contribute to enhancing the lives of those around us. Those who are looking to strive for excellence and add balance to your lives, look no further. The answer is within.
